Gabriel

Gabriel perfomed 2019 by Drama Centre London is a play about identity and the colonisation of the Canary Islands from the Germans in 1943, Directed by Alexanra Spencer Jones.

The catalyst for this design came from a design problem in the script in one of the scenes (How do I show two rooms in one scene being the kitchen and the attic In the script).

This design was inspired by the history and the architecture of the angularities of the WW2 bunkers as well as the textures that form when they are lived in harsh conditions like metal forming rust, paint chipping from erosion and concrete cracking. The flooring and concrete itself represents an island that has been colonised in historical reference to the Nazis taking over Guernsey and shown as the performers never leave the concrete space.

Layering has also been a key theme as the script as Gabriel being having many identities his past, In the same way the design shows layers to separate spaces and create doors that can reveal a space and a scene.

The opening and closing of doors was a way to reveal a surprise in the set revealing an elevated attic as well as solving the issue of two scenes being shown at once. The doors within doors also illustrate the tragedy that despite all the characters entering and exiting through different doors they ultimately have the same tragic fate.
